Snap Redesign: Is This The Beginning of the End?

According to a TechCrunch poll, 83% of users do not like the new Snapchat redesign. There is even a petition with over 800,000 signatures to revert back to the old interface. Some would argue this update is the beginning of the end, while other more “popular” Snapchat accounts love the new interface because their story views have nearly doubled! Is this the typical hysteria that arises when major changes are made to a platform or something bigger? As your trusted source for all things social media marketing, we have broken down the pros and cons of the app’s new look and feel.

PROS:

  • The app is saying that the redesign makes sending and viewing 1-to-1, daily snaps much easier. Why does this matter? On average, Snapchat claims their users are sending 34 direct snaps a day which was more promising than the zero growth they saw when it came to Stories.

  • Ads are integrated into a separate feed in the ‘Discover’ content section.

CONS:

  • Stories from friends are scattered throughout messages rather than laid out together.

  • Social media stars, brands, and others who (gasp!) don’t follow you back are now in the Discover section.

Despite this update, I have been a HUGE and strong-willed supporter of Snapchat, but I think this update might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. I’m getting almost 3x the number of views on Instagram Stories than I do on Snap. As someone who takes pride in their social media engagement, Instagram Stories delivers, but I am staying positive and will give the new Snapchat update a fair try.

How do you feel about the redesign? Do you love it? Hate it? Let us know in the comments!
